AUSTRALIAN DESIGN ON SHOW AT SENSORY INSTALLATION BY LOCAL DESIGN

One of our favourite experiences during MDW17 so far has been a visit to LOCAL MILAN; an installation curated by Australian designer, stylist and creative director of LOCAL DESIGN, Emma Elizabeth. Set within a spectacular historical church in Milan’s 5VIE district, the installation showcases the work of 11 established Australian designers, each chosen for their crucial role in the current Australian designer landscape.

Exploring the junction where art and design meet, visitors are encouraged to put on white gloves as they enter the space to encourage curiosity and touch; ultimately creating a tactile immersive experience. Inside the space, 8,000 white bricks have been placed to create textural plinths to showcase the products. Taking the sensory concept further, botanical oil from Aesop drifts through the space, complimented by haunting yet beautiful acoustics by Australian soul musician Tash Sultana.

Now in its second year, it’s inspiring to see Australian design hold its own with such a large presence during Milan Design Week – all thanks to Emma Elizabeth and her LOCAL DESIGN / LOCAL MILAN initiative. Among the 11 designers is Adam Goodrum, a talented industrial designer who has worked in partnership with Cult since 2014. Goodrum uses the LOCAL MILAN installation as an opportunity to preview his new Bilgola collection; a beautiful series of timber furniture inspired by the modernist architecture prevalent on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Goodrum has designed this collection for NAU, the new Australian furniture brand to be launched internationally in May at ICFF, New York and locally in June at DENFAIR, Melbourne. Stay tuned - we are beyond excited to reveal more soon!

The full collective of 11 designers include ACV Studio, Adam Goodrum, Charles Wilson, Christopher Boots, Dowel Jones, Emma Elizabeth, Jon Goulder, Kate Banazi x Ryan McGoldrick, Ross Gardam, Tom Fereday and Tom Skeehan.
