With the latest edition of Salone del Mobile fast approaching, we’re busy packing our bags and preparing our schedules for what is set to be one the most inspiring weeks of our calendar this year. With so much to explore, experience and absorb and a myriad of ground to cover, here we make things simple, rounding up our top must-sees and most anticipated events for Milan Design Week 2019.
RHO FIERA FAIRGROUNDS//
We’re thrilled to see so many of our brand partners exhibiting at the Rho Fiera Fairgrounds for the 58th edition of Salone del Mobile. This year, as it is every second year, is Euroluce: the lighting year, so on the first day we’ll be making a run to beat the crowds over at our lighting brands, Louis Poulsen and Nemo.
Our next stop will be with Fritz Hansen, who earlier this year rebranded, unveiling a completely new identity. We’re expecting new colours, fabrics and designs from the iconic Danish giant.
Next up is Carl Hansen, who have invited us to enjoy a moment of calm at their Oasis themed stand and showroom, both will house design classics and novelties by masters including Hans J. Wegner, Børge Mogensen, Frits Henningsen & EOOS.
Last but not least, we’ll be stopping at Nanimarquina, who are presenting six new collections at the fair this year.

A product of two years of extensive research, Earth Stations are places that shape relationships amongst humans and during Milan Design Week, De Lucchi will reinterpret the Poltrona Frau showroom into his vision of this new typology, dividing the space into conference rooms, co-working spaces, reading areas, relaxing areas and even a coffee bar to refuel.
3. SUPERDESIGN SHOW
SUPERSTUDIO is one of the most sought after and visited destinations of the Milanese Design Week and this year has been re-thought completely with the SUPERDESIGN SHOW event, bringing visitors the latest designs and the most significant proposals of the year across automotive, 3D software, textiles, furniture and art. The forthcoming edition of the project by Gisella Borioli with the art director Giulio Cappellini, follows the usual mission, only the best, with particular attention to the theme of innovation and tradition. Expect to experience the Lexus Leading with Light design event, and SUPERHOTEL, a new design hotel project curated by Italian master Giulio Cappellini.
4. LOCAL MILAN NO.4
Presented by Emma Elizabeth and LOCAL DESIGN, the fourth edition of LOCAL MILAN will be unveiled at this year’s Design Week, showcasing the work of 44 Australian and New Zealand designers, the largest showcase of its kind in Milan. The lower level will play host to the NAU cafe, where visitors to the fair can take a moment to reflect, refresh and even enjoy a taste of home with a quirky Australian snack. We recommend stopping by on Wednesday 10 April from 6pm for an Aperitivo hosted by NAU!

Kvadrat and Raf Simons celebrate the launch of its much anticipated 6th collection with the installation No Man’s Land. The collection comprises a dozen pieces of furniture all formed by the effects of gravity on molten glass over a pipe or mould, including an armchair, chaise longue, dining table, side table, partition and vase. Melt will be showcased at the Shape of Gravity exhibition during design week this year.
9. COS PAVILION
London-based fashion brand COS has tapped Arthur Mamou-Mani to collaborate on its next installation. Mamou-Mani is set to create a digitally fabricated pavilion that will guide visitors through the courtyard and into the surrounding gardens of Palazzo Isimbardi, the 16th-century palace that hosted Phillip K Smith III’s atmospheric ‘open sky‘ sculpture last year. Together with COS, he hopes to combine architecture with the natural world, showcasing the capabilities of digital fabrication and renewable materials. A must-visit on the Design Week agenda.

The installation, titled Raytrace, showcases Dekton®, the ultra-compact, large format surface by Cosentino on an architectural scale – exploring the product’s innovation and beautiful design and demonstrating its strength and durability. Contrasting a dramatic, 24 meters long, triangular element with mesmerising caustic patterns emulating the refraction of light through water- Raytrace is a visually powerful demonstration of Dekton’s qualities.
12. KVADRAT | BLUE IS DIVINE
At this year’s Salone del Mobile, Kvadrat is presenting Blue is Divine, a colourful homage to Finn Sködt: graphic designer, painter and long-time collaborator of Kvadrat. The exhibition is inspired by pure pigments from his workshop and Divina Melange in Sködt’s favourite Ultramarine blue. Celebrating the mark of Finn Sködt and Kvadrat’s extensive collaboration, an updated colour palette of Divina Melange will be launched, accentuating the textiles continuing strong colour story.
13. FRITZ HANSEN SHOWROOM
2019 marked the beginning of an exciting new journey for Danish design brand Fritz Hansen, who unveiled a bold new identity. ‘Republic of Fritz Hansen’ became 'Fritz Hansen', paying homage to its 147-year heritage yet looking forward. How better to fully experience the new era of fritz Hansen than with a trip to their showroom in Milan's charming artist quarter, Brera?
EDISON SMART STATIONS | BRERA DESIGN DISTRICT
One to note for those of us who will be snapping pictures, sending emails and working as we wander during Design Week this year! The Brera Design District is supported by Edison, who are providing visitors with an oasis of calm thanks to their Smart Stations: smart benches with free wifi connection, where design week-goers can sit, rest and recharge devices with the renewable energy of photovoltaic panels. A much-needed solution for those who need to regenerate and recharge batteries.
