Last week we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Sydney Opera House, designed by renowned Danish architect, Jørn Utzon, with a special panel talk event held in the Utzon Room.
Expertly chaired by Yellowtrace founder, Dana Tomić Hughes, the discussion explored how Jørn Utzon's love of nature, especially water, influenced his work on Sydney Opera House.
Architect Richard Leplastrier talked about his time working at the Utzon office in the 1960s; personal anecdotes were shared by Jørn Utzon's grandson and the artist Mika Utzon Popov; Line Nørskov Eriksen, Director of Exhibitions at the Utzon Center, led the discussion on Jørn Utzon the architect as a custodian of his work; and Els Van Hoorebeeck, &Tradition Creative and Brand Director, offered insights into Utzon's influence extending beyond architecture.
It was a special evening filled with personal stories and insights into the mind of this truly great architect, all in celebration of the iconic landmark and its visionary creator. We'd like to thank everyone who attended and made the event so memorable.
"With harbour views stretched behind the 200-or-so seats of the Utzon Room – one of two internal spaces entirely finished to the architect’s specifications – and one of Utzon’s vibrant tapestries displayed behind the panellists, there couldn’t have been a more fitting space for hearing stories of Utzon’s life, work and affinity with the sea.
The audience was also reminded of cultural exchanges between Australia and Utzon’s native Denmark … though at this celebratory occasion, there seemed to be an unspoken agreement that certain exchanges needn’t be revisited. Instead, tales flowed between Utzon’s family members, collaborators and design custodians, forming a narrative about the poetry and passion that fuelled the architect’s work."

In commemoration of Jørn Utzon and his contribution to design, Danish brand &Tadition has taken inspiration from one of his favourite colours to create the Special Edition Utzon Pendant Lamp.
The pendant was originally conceived by Utzon in 1947, a decade before he began work on the monument. Its structure is a precursor for the lyrical aesthetic of the landmark’s silhouette.
The new Steel Blue shade references the colour of the harbour water and the high-gloss finish is inspired by the ceramic tiles that cover the iconic building.
