NEWS from 3 Days of Design
Denmark’s annual design event brings together the world’s best Danish design brands for a preview of the latest launches in furniture, lighting and lifestyle. Usually an unmissable event in our calendar, this year we experienced 3 Days from afar, spying new designs, re-issued classics and the most beautiful showrooms in Copenhagen. Here we present the latest and greatest from Gubi, Louis Poulsen, Vipp, Carl Hansen, Mater, &tradition and Montana.
Celebrating ‘unconventional living’ Gubi presented an array of striking silhouettes and organic expressions inspired by the 1970s. Contemporary novelties from GamFratesi and Space Copenhagen, alongside new pieces from the archives of Marcel Gascoin were presented from their transformed Copenhagen showroom.
Adding to the iconic C-Chair collection by Marcel Gascoin, Gubi revived the original design from 1947 with hand-woven paper cord, and presented a new edition with a veneer seat and backrest.
The S-Table, made from solid and veneered oak or walnut, is characterized by understated and timeless elegance that complements a range of interior styles. Its innovative extending functionality and clean lines soon turned it into a household staple when it was originally designed – the same characteristics that make it ideal for modern homes today. The S-Table comes in an extendable version that can be easily adapted to seat 6, 8, or 10 people, depending on the occasion.
The 1951 B-Table is a contemporary classic designed by Marcel Gascoin based on the popular folding bridge table typology, upon which the famous card game is typically played. This contemporary version is perfect for homework, working on a laptop and dining. The square table can be transformed into a rounded table thanks to an ingenious turning mechanism and magnetic locks, making this the perfect table for the small space living of city-dwellers.
Flaneur Modula Sofa, Sejour Lounge Chair, IOI Coffee Tables
Sejour Lounge Chair
Danish-Italian design duo GamFratesi were inspired by the nineteenth-century English roll-arm sofa when designing Flaneur - known for its undulating profile, taut upholstery, deep seats and low rolled arms. Adding a timeless Scandinavian simplicity to this enduring typology with straighter lines and clearer geometry, Flaneur is a modular sofa that invites complete relaxation in any setting.
Inspired by a contemporary take on the mid-century Scandinavian design tradition, GamFratesi also presented the Sejour Lounge Chair, which has a soft, rounded backrest and welcoming seat. It’s elegant design references early 18th-century ‘slipper’ chairs, once reserved for sitting on while donning shoes or slippers in elegant Victorian boudoirs.
Louis Poulsen Available from October 2020
Launching at the beginning of October and previewed at 3 Days of Design, the PH Septima is regarded as one of Poul Henningsen’s most refined pendants. When exhibited for the first time as a prototype at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art (now Designmuseum Danmark) in 1928, the poetic piece was publicly applauded. Based on the PH three-shade system, the glass crown has four extra shades inserted between the three basic shades - all seven produced in delicate but strong Italian borosilicate glass. In the 40s, the esteemed PH Septima went out of production together with numerous other lamps at the time, due to the shortage of raw materials. In October 2020, Louis Poulsen will bring back Poul Henningsen’s sophisticated seven-shade glass crown, with optimized suspension and enhanced glass for better endurance and stability.

Poul Henningsen Available October - December 2020
PH 5 Monochrome
Louis Poulsen also launched a limited edition of Poul Henningsen’s PH 2/1 Table Lamp in brass, which is available from October until the end of 2020. The design and materiality of the elegant classic is paired with the illustrious amber coloured glass shades, known for their distinct ability to create instant ambiance in any space. As with the original lamp, the brass will patinate over time and enhance the authentic look and feel of the limited 2020 edition.
Emphasising Henningsen’s striking design, Louis Poulsen’s final piece shown at 3 Days of Design was the PH 5 Monochrome, which is available to order now.

CH78 Mama Bear Chair
Hans J Wegner
Carl Hansen and Son’s Flagship Store in the heart of Copenhagen hosted an exhibition reflecting on the modern and the timeless. Featuring classic furniture and craftsmanship in a new context, Carl Hansen presented designs by Hans J. Wegner, Børge Mogensen, Nanna Ditzel and Rikke Frost.
Affectionately known as the Mama Bear Chair, the CH78 Lounge Chair by Hans J. Wegner was originally introduced in 1954 as an antidote to the often heavy lounge chairs of his time. Mama Bear’s sculptural silhouette is defined by a series of inviting curves that offer up a warm embrace.

Rikke Frost Available early 2021
A preview of Carl Hansen and Son's first collaboration with contemporary Danish designer Rikke Frost was also shown, featuring a modern shape yet classic design. The asymmetric Sideways Sofa invites conversation and is available in early 2021.
BM0253 Sheving System
ND54 High Chair
Calling on their archives, the Shelving System by Børge Mogensen and the 1954 High Chair by Nana Ditzel were the last two designs presented by Carl Hansen. Børge Mogensen's expandable Shelving System was found in the designers forgotten drawings and is a system that can be rebuilt, built on and adapted to individual storage needs and changing room sizes. Equally functional, High Chair is a re-issued classic for children, designed to complement other designer furniture in the home.
Adding to their collection of sustainably produced designs and innovative manufacturing processes, Mater launched two new designs by Danish architect Eva Harlou - Mask and Earth Stool. Both Stools are produced using a ground-breaking production method using the low-value waste from Carlsberg’s beer production - the spent grain (Danish ‘mask’) is turned it into useful and unique design solutions. After years of research and tests, Mater managed to process the waste material and mix it with post-industrial plastic waste in a unique compound suitable for press moulding.
The Mask and Earth stool demonstrate a waste-to-value technique which reuses companies’ resources more efficiently and demonstrates Mater's ethos to care for our planet and next generations. The Mast stool seat is made from beer production waste and recycled fibres, and the Earth stool seat is made from insulin pens and coffee bean shells.
