Seven years since the opening of the first HAY store in Australia on Crown Street, Sydney, the Danish design brand expands with the launch of its second Australian retail space in one of Melbourne’s most vibrant and creative districts just north of the CBD.

Nestled on the corner of Johnston and Napier streets in Fitzroy, the premium 160m2 HAY Melbourne store is managed and operated by Cult Design, and brings a full retail experience of the world of HAY to Melbourne design lovers.

Curated through an Australian design lens, the store features a vibrant exterior mural by local artist Jasmine Mansbridge and stand-out retail counter designed by leading Australian industrial designer Adam Goodrum in collaboration with plastic recycling company Defy Design.

Much like its flagship store in Copenhagen, HAY Melbourne delights visitors with an open plan, laid out as an apartment, offering a wide selection of furniture and accessories, from sofas to lighting, textiles and glassware. New releases in-store include the Rey chair by Bruno Rey, Pao Portable Lamp by Naoto Fukasawa and Balcony outdoor range by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, alongside collection bestsellers such as the About A Chair, Mags Sofa, Colour Crates and Palissade range.

HAY Melbourne is now open at 176 Johnston Street, Fitzroy VIC 3066.

BEHIND THE SCENES. The making of a mural

Curated through an Australian design lens, the new HAY Melbourne store features a vibrant exterior mural by local artist Jasmine Mansbridge.

Richard Munao, Cult's founder and director, shares: "We wanted to localise the store and reflect Melbourne’s street culture in the design. We started with the idea of graffiti and thought Jasmine’s architectural and colourful style would work well for a design store. We worked on the design together, referencing the HAY colour palette and design shapes."

HAY PHAIDON BOOK. Celebrating 20 years of design

Esteemed creative arts publisher Phaidon has published a book on HAY! Coinciding with HAY's 20th anniversary, this new inspiring book explores HAY's origins and astronomical trajectory - starting in 2002 when husband and wife Rolf and Mette Hay founded the company. New in stock, both in store and online now.

The book puts on paper the alchemy that makes HAY’s products, philosophy, and retail environments so distinct, featuring HAY’s ever-growing stable of brilliant international designers including Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Muller Van Severen, Doshi Levien, and GamFratesi, along with collaborations with brands such as COS, IKEA, SONOS, and more. Designed by Clara von Zweigbergk, the book features a foreword by John Hoke, Chief Design Officer of Nike, plus over 300 images, essays, interviews with key designers and collaborators, and an illustrated timeline of key milestones over the years.
