We are delighted to announce the promotion of Ben Downey who has been appointed as Marketing Executive at Cult. Ben has worked at Cult for six years and his core skills in graphic design, digital marketing and events have contributed to his success in the business. Here, we sit down with Ben to find out more about his career highlights, 2023 goals and more.

After studying Media Communications and beginning a career in fashion e-comm, Ben decided to follow his passion for furniture and architecture and return to university to study Product Design at UTS.

Starting at Cult Design in 2016 as a casual showroom assistant while completing his honours, on graduating he decided to combine his expertise in Media Communication and Furniture Design to join Cult’s Marketing team.

His experience in both marketing and design allows him to bring unique passion, knowledge and insight. He primarily works across digital marketing, having project managed the launch of six websites; content creation across print, digital and video; graphic design; event management, campaign management, PR and branding for Australia, New Zealand and Singapore markets.

Favourite design from the Cult collection?

The Cappellini Wooden Chair is a perfect example of Marc Newson’s desire to push the limits of both design and materiality. Consisting of slated strips of beech steam bent to a ‘double curve’ or ‘alpha shape’, the design was originally conceived as a commissioned piece for the NSW government. A usable piece of art, this icon is much beloved in the design community and a personal favourite from my own collection.

Three things you like to do outside of work?

Going to the beach! Staying active with the gym, pilates and walking. I also love travel and am lucky enough to have lived in Europe and North America.

What initially attracted you to join the Cult team?

Having studied the designs of Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner and Achille Castiglioni during my studies, Cult was an obvious choice when looking for inspirational places to work.  Cult has long been home to original design icons, championing authentic design while emphasising the history and stories behind the designs. The product catalogue initially drew me to the business but the passionate team and great work culture have kept me here for almost six years.

Highlights from your time at Cult?

My first time at Milan Design Week and 3 Days of Design in 2022. With the world being closed for almost two years prior, the design fairs were electric with excitement and inspiration. Super excited to see what 2023 brings on an international and local scale.

The Chairity Project in 2022 is another highlight -  being able to work on a special project that brings the Australian design community together to help raise funds for important charities was a very rewarding experience.

I've also really loved the opportunity to develop Cult’s digital presence. When I first started we were limited to one website and four years later we now have six websites (three of them e-comm), across three countries.

What are your goals and plans for 2023 in your role?

2023 will bring about some geographical change as I follow my partner to Spain after doing long distance for 18 months. Working remotely for the year will allow me to really focus on Cult’s digital marketing, where I plan to take a more active role in planning, strategising and implementation. After our digital over-haul four years ago we are due for a refresh!

What do you enjoy most about being part of the Cult team?

Being able to work within an industry I appreciate and get so much inspiration from. I'm also grateful for opportunities to develop and grow within the industry and having the trust of my managers.
