On Thursday 26 June, Cultivated, Instyle and Cult came together to host Conscious Design: Local Impact — an inspiring evening focused on empowering thoughtful, local design decisions that reduce environmental impact and support the future of Australian design.

Held as an intimate sit-down discussion and moderated by Nichole from Instyle, the event featured industry changemakers Adwena Shemon (Territory Manager at Cultivated), Lisa Barbara (ESG Manager at Cult), and Eloise Rapp (Sustainability Manager at Instyle). Together, they explored the role of sustainability, circularity and co-design, with an emphasis on local manufacturing, supply chains and the importance of specifying high-quality, long-lasting products.

The conversation unpacked practical ways to create meaningful impact — from specifying locally made wool textiles by Instyle, to choosing quality, long-lasting products, and embracing initiatives like Cultivated, which gives pre-loved furniture a second life. Guests also discussed the benefits of local manufacturing, the importance of early engagement with suppliers, and innovations like digital product passports for greater transparency.

Guests were welcomed with a delicious Indigenous-inspired spread by Fijam & Co, paired with crisp wines by Anvers, before taking their seats in a beautifully styled space that celebrated circular and sustainable design.

On display was a curated selection of furniture from Cultivated, Instyle and Cult Design, including the PA Lounge Chair, designed by Timothy Robertson for nau, Australian made and refurbished by Cultivated. Also featured were the Series 7 Chair by Fritz Hansen in Source col. Pride wool, the Tait Chair by Cappellini in Atlas col. Amber, all styled with Instyle's locally made textiles, reinforcing the evening’s core message around materiality and local production.

With around 60 guests in attendance - spanning designers, architects and industry leaders - the event was an opportunity to gather and discuss the real, measurable impact that local, considered design choices can have.
